Building a Generation of Young Peacebuilders

Building a Generation of Young Peacebuilders

The Youth Peacebuilder Initiative (YPI) is HAPEI’s school-based advocacy and peace education programme designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to prevent conflict, promote dialogue, address bullying, and become active agents of peace within their schools and communities.

Through interactive training, mentorship, dialogue, and community-based activities, participants develop practical skills in conflict resolution, mediation, emotional intelligence, leadership, empathy, and non-violent communication. The programme helps young people understand the causes and effects of conflict and equips them with practical tools to respond to disagreements, bullying, peer pressure, and other challenges without violence.

YPI goes beyond teaching young people about peace. It creates opportunities for them to practice peace, lead peace, and become peacebuilders in their schools and communities.

Our Impact

Through the Youth Peacebuilder Initiative, HAPEI has:

  • Reached 700+ students with peace education and peacebuilding training.
  • Engaged 8 schools across 6 states in Nigeria, taking peace education beyond the classroom and into diverse communities.
  • Equipped students with practical skills in conflict resolution, mediation, emotional intelligence, leadership, and non-violent communication.
  • Created opportunities for young people to become peer advocates and champions of peaceful coexistence within their schools.
  • Promoted conversations around bullying, violence prevention, empathy, tolerance, and respectful relationships among students.
  • Established spaces where young people can learn, dialogue, and take action as contributors to peace in their communities (Peace Corner Club)
